Our family holidays at Walt Disney World each and every January. Even though we live in Orlando, it’s like a true vacation without the hassle of long-distance travel.

January is one of the best months to visit Disney World. The lines are short and the weather is absolutely fabulous. The best deals can be had at the best resorts at this time of year as well. Most recently we stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge. Right outside our window we could see giraffes and zebras grazing on the savannah. The zebras were very active with the little nip in the air.

Disney offers so many other fun and inexpensive things to do. There is free transportation around the resorts and parks for guests. Each night we relaxed in the hotel pool, spas, and saunas. My daughter and I went down to the lodge lobby, which has gorgeous fireplaces and read books by the fireplace before bed.

We also took advantage of the free water ferries, nightly fireworks, and visiting several of the other resorts during our stay. Whether you live in Orlando or not, Walt Disney World in January might be the best family holiday you’ve ever experienced.

If you are planning on traveling out of the country, don’t let a holiday accident ruin your vacation. Take some time to consider this advice to avoid or handle an accident abroad. Start prepared. See a doctor or dentist, be in good health and get shots if needed. Make sure your insurance covers accidents or medical emergencies in another country. Talk to your travel agent about medical emergencies, the nearest hospitals in your destination area.

Contact your phone carrier to see about cell phone charges and coverage abroad. Once you arrive keep in mind: Know the safety issues of the area, whether insects, or drunk drivers. Avoid high risk areas or activities. Like accepting rides, too good to be true schemes, or drinking to excess. If the worst happens be prepared to respond. Know where you are and how to proceed for help. Have a mobile phone on you, know the numbers to call if you need assistance. Prevention and preparation take a little work on your part. But may pay off with your or a loved one’s health or even life being saved.

I used to work in a chemistry laboratory in the pharmaceutical industry making new drugs. We used to design new chemical structures and then synthesise them. I was working in a fume cupboard on a difficult synthesis with my technician who was very willing but subject to occasional silly mistakes.

Sometimes in chemistry it is very important which way round you add materials. For instance if you add acid to water it is fine, but if you add water to acid it can react violently or explode, and this is precisely what he did. Luckily we were both uninjured but our clothes were covered in a bright green substance that could not be removed. We were wearing laboratory coats but these only protected part of us. I went to the personnel department and filled in an accident at work report.

They said that as this was the mistake of my technician, who was under my charge, in effect it was my fault. Thus I could not claim compensation. I argued that the lab coat they had provided to me did not offer adequate protection. It went to a senior manager who accepted my accident claim and we both received compensation.

A Mattress Instead of a Cold? Constantly sniffling this winter? It may be more than a virus that’s getting to you. You house could be full of allergens, especially if you don’t have air circulation and you’ve been keeping the windows closed. One remedy you might consider is replacing your mattress? If your mattress has been around a while, chances are you’ve been cultivating a first class colony of dust mites. You could have anywhere from a hundred thousand to ten million dust mites in there. They thrive in the warm innards of your mattress, feasting on the skin and hair you shed.

A mattress is likely to last you only seven to ten years. It doesn’t sound like long until you realize the tens of thousands of hours you will put it to in that time. The best way to figure out if you need one is to take a closer look at your sleep. Are you sleeping poorly? Are you sore when you wake up in the morning? Do you find yourself waking often in the night? Does it just look and feel worn out? You might be able to tell by walking into a mattress store and feeling the difference.

Two of my immediate family members recently purchased and installed a foam mattress on their king sized bed. It was expensive but I am not sure if it cost more that a box spring mattress or not. They needed a new mattress because their old water bed had sprung a leak. I laid down on the mattress a few times and thought it felt comfortable. One advantage to the foam mattress is the light weight and ease of installation compared to other bedding options. One thing I worry about is lifetime but I’ve heard that this type of mattress is hard wearing and will last a long time. Its something that is really appealing when thinking about buying a mattress. I am considering purchasing a foam mattress because I currently use a futon and it is uncomfortable.
